Famous Tv and Movie Houses in Los Angeles That Are A Must See

The book begins in fictional Landsdale County, Connecticut, where Jim and Muriel Blandings are being shown an old farmhouse by a real estate agent. Blandings, a successful New York advertising executive, and his wife want to leave their tiny Midtown apartment, where they live with their two daughters. They fantasize that the farmhouse will meet their needs.

The Story Behind “Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House”

One of the funniest things was that the plans did not include closets or windows. Contractors were left to their own devices on these. In the late 1940's, Jim Blandings, a successful account executive in the advertising business, lives with his wife Muriel and two daughters, Betsy and Joan, in a cramped New York apartment. Muriel secretly plans to knock out a wall and remodel their apartment for $7,000. After rejecting this idea, Jim comes across an ad for new homes in Connecticut and they get excited about moving.

Frank Gehry House

My favorite scene is when Myrna LOy asks the painter about the paint colors .I use this always when Im buying paint .. If Los Angeles is the the city of angels, then its citizens must be filled with lofty dreams. Whether focused on silver screen glory or the California good life, these residents know how to they want to live. Case in point may just be the countless alluring homes that dot L.A.’s urban landscape.

And yet there’s no denying that it’s the same house. Gone are the shutters and the consistent color scheme. Today the house features wood siding on the top half and a small portico has been added over the front porch. The house is still standing in the very spot where it was built for filming.

You used to be able to tour the house but now the new owners only make it available to the public during special events. This is the only Neutra designed home that is available for tours. It was first built in 1932 for Neutra and his family. It is called the research house because it was built with a loan from a patron. A fire destroyed most of the house in 1963 and was rebuilt by Neutra’s son with the Dad’s oversight. Yes things certainly changed ( I wanted to live in that house ), but its great its real and still standing.

Also, the ‘as built’ home shows a roof line different than that of the promotional plans. The rear roof line over the living room seems to be lower than the front roof line, whereas the published plans show these as equal. This would allow for a larger living room and avoids having the side terrace door from being placed on-center to the living room fireplace.

I am really looking forward to checking this one out in person in the future. My grandfather built a home in 1942 in a similar style, albeit much smaller. Interestingly, this house and many like it in the neighborhood lacked protection over the front door – just like the Blanding’s house. Odd, considering we lived in an area that receives snow, as well as rain. There are windows in the side of the house now, but the little covered porch on the side of the house is now a bay window. And instead of being surrounded by a manicured lawn, the house sits on a desert landscape.

A Cinderella Story House

We drove down a long lane, past hikers and campers and surrounded by beautiful mountain landscapes, until we came to a dead end. And there stood Mr. Blandings’ fictional dream house. As you can see,  a lot has changed in the past 66 years.

Finding filming locations from movies and TV shows has become one of my favorite things to do. Lately, I have been visiting a lot of famous TV and movie houses in Los Angeles. Almost any part of the LA area will be home to at least one or two of the iconic houses. Since all the homes on this list are private residences I do ask and recommend that you try and be as respectful as possible when you go to visit. One of my favorite movies – and houses 😀You’ll note that the house, ‘as built’ differed from the promotional plans published by the studio.

The biggest bummer is that you cannot take photography indoors. I was in awe of the living room and so badly wanted a picture. The architect shows them the rendering of how it will look when it’s finished and the music swells.

Over the years the color of the house has changed several times, the white picket fence is gone, but the unique shape is still recognizable. The House from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure is located at 1848 Oxley Street in South Pasadena. I wish I could visit the iconic Braverman house that Zeke and Camile owned on Parenthood but that was built on the Universal Backlots. However, there are locations where the many other characters lived that can be visited. This Pasadena home is where Adam & Kristina raise their three children on the show.

I visited the Hollyhock House in February of 2020 right before things got crazy with COVID-19. Thanks to a lecture series that was happening I was able to get visit this amazing home for free. Docents were placed throughout the home to offer insight but it was nice to get to walk around on our own.
